GOA SYMPOSIUM: CULTURES, LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES BRAZIL EDITION, SÃO PAULO 17-18-19 OCTOBER, 2016 The International Symposium Goa: Cultures, Languages and Literatures, Brazil Edition, São Paulo, will focus on the intellectual life of Goa. At the first edition, in Goa, we explored the day-to-day intellectual exchanges in Portuguese that once took place there, as well as the different meanings the resulting output might have, especially in the literary and artistic fields. After this meeting, it became clear to the organisers that it was impossible to consider the Portuguese language in Goa in isolation from the other tongues of Goan cultural production. In this second symposium, we shall factor in this linguistic breadth, keeping in mind the various languages spoken in Goa and opening space for the study of the relations between cultural production in Portuguese and that of other intellectual milieus. Though it is challenging to bring the plurilingualism of Goa into our discussions, it is nevertheless vital for us to formulate critical and theoretical tools that allow us adequately to think through this plural space, which includes diverse areas, such as history, philosophy, theology, literary studies, linguistics and music, among others, areas in which intense intellectual exchanges took place whose dimensions are little recognised today.
